In October 2013, CAREGIFTED sent Lisa to Victoria, BC, one of the Pacific Northwest’s oldest and most beautiful cities, for a week of relaxation and reflection. Read below for some of Lisa’s thoughts on being a caregiver to her daughter, Chelsy, and her experiences in Victoria.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I normally get woken up by my daughter at 4am. Change her diaper, give her medication for seizures. Meal, meds, laundry, cleanup 20 messes each day.
What’s the hardest part about caregiving that nobody sees?
The hardest part is the exhaustion. The 24/7 responsibility until I die. Not just 18 years. My daughter is 21 years old.
What about caregiving brings you the most pleasure?
I get the most pleasure from the love and hugs Chelsy gives.
Do you have any special interests or talents outside of caregiving?
I have no idea what I like to do, I have been so focused on Chelsy’s needs.
In three words, describe how you felt before you went on your getaway.
Empty, depressed, tired
Describe a moment during your getaway when you felt the most relaxed or at ease.
I got to lay in bed until 2:30pm reading. I took care of me and my needs-only. Strange feeling.
What was your favorite “spot” on your getaway? Why?
My favorite spot was sitting on the beach. Just to be still.
What was the funniest moment on your getaway?
The funniest parts of my trip were while I was with Heather. We had some good laughs together.
In three words, describe how you felt when you returned from your getaway.
Healed, calm, refreshed
How has your getaway changed your perspective on life and your role as a caregiver?
I realized I need to have some “me” time and have my own interests. I have to get healthy so I can help my daughter.
What emotions did you experience when you came home?
I feel grateful for my life!
What thoughts or information would you share with other caregivers who are going on their own getaway?
I would have Heather make a list of places to avoid and the yummy restaurants. Thank you so much for this wonderful getaway! Your program had to be inspired! God bless Heather!
CAREGIFTED would like to thank Lisa for sharing her experiences with us. We are so glad that she enjoyed her time in Victoria, and we are grateful that we were able to help.
