Christy Shake’s blog, Calvin's Story is an extraordinary chronicle of her family’s struggle to care for her son. At any moment, Christy and her husband Michael can find their lives under assault by what she calls: “…a savage monster that eclipsed all other adversity we had yet encountered. That monster was, and continues to be, epilepsy.”
She writes: “Calvin's first seizure was a grand mal seizure. He had a fever and was resting peacefully with us when suddenly he seemed to choke. His body stiffened and he turned ashen-grey, then blue, and with eyes bulging, he began to convulse... Calvin cannot tell us what is hurting. The monster continues to pummel our little boy. It haunts us day and night. It has stifled his development and there seems to be no end in sight to this nightmare.”
Even though Chisty can sometimes sense the coming seizure by the scent of Calvin’s breath, the monster often arrives without warning.
This past year Christy has found an unexpected ray of hope in treating Calvin’s intractable epilepsy with a new drug -- Cannabis. Although still illegal in most states, derivatives of marijuana have shown great promise in preventing and relieving the symptoms of epilepsy. Christy is one of a handful of caregivers openly chronicling her experiments to treat epilepsy with Cannabis oil and use it to wean her son from powerful and dangerous benzodiazapine anti-seizure medications.
This month Calvin returned to school and after his first day Christy wrote about another beneficial and natural form of therapy -- the family’s new dog, Nellie:
For nearly three years, through over a thousand posts, Christy has beautifully conveyed the experience of living in ceaseless expectation of crisis.
